Riding
It was near the end of the 9th century that Vikings in longships set course towards the thinly-populated Iceland and went ashore with their rucksacks, women, children, cows, sheep, and horses. The horses they brought from Norway were similar to the Germanic ponies- small of height but full of power and endurance. In addition they had with them Celtic ponies, which the Viking took as spoils from the coasts of Britain, which were lighter and finer than the Germanic ponies. These two breeds laid the foundation for the breed known as the Icelandic Horse.
